Gear up: what to wear on every ride

Helmet first, every time

Your helmet is the single most important piece of gear. Choose a certified helmet that fits snugly without pressure points, and always fasten the chin strap. A helmet that has taken a hard knock should be replaced, even if it looks fine.

Cover your skin

• Gloves: protect your hands and improve grip. Your hands go out first in a fall.
• Jacket and trousers: abrasion-resistant material, ideally with armour at shoulders, elbows and knees.
• Boots: sturdy footwear that covers the ankle. Never ride in slippers or sandals.
• Eye protection: a visor or goggles keep out dust, insects and rain.

Be seen

Bright or reflective clothing makes you easier to spot in traffic, day and night. The Nigeria Highway Code advises motorcyclists to wear bright-coloured clothing and avoid loose garments.
