The controls
- Right hand: throttle (twist grip) and front brake lever.
- Left hand: clutch lever, plus switches for indicators, horn and lights.
- Left foot: gear lever. Usually one down for first gear, then up through the rest.
- Right foot: rear brake pedal.
- Engine kill switch: usually by the right thumb, for stopping the engine quickly.
Common types of motorcycle
- Standard / commuter: upright and easy to handle. The usual choice for learning.
- Scooter: automatic, with no clutch or gears. Easy in city traffic.
- Sport: forward-leaning riding position, built for performance.
- Cruiser: low seat, relaxed position, heavier.
- Adventure / dual-sport: tall, rugged, and happy on both tarmac and rough roads.
Engine size
Engine capacity is measured in cc. A smaller, lighter bike is easier to learn on. Build skill first, then move up. The Nigeria Highway Code notes that motorcycles under 50cc may not use highways or expressways.
